The original SEO legends include such names as DaveN, Oilman, and Webguerilla. Guys who are generally accepted to be at the top of the field — and very very smart.
Why are they legends? Besides years of success? Well, when you’re on a first name basis with Matt Cutts, or if you get to spend time alone with Sergei and Larry, in our little industry, that makes you an A-Lister.
I “grew up” in a later graduating SEO class (the 4th generation?) Of course, I got mad respect for our ancestors, but I really like my class of ‘04 (yeah, I realize most of this class was in SEO before ‘04, but it seems like that’s when their names got big). In no particular order:
- AWall (AKA “Mr. Book“) - You gotta give him props for mainting such brutal honesty on a professional blog that sells an eBook. Such honesty has definitely prevented him from being linked as often as other blogging SEO brethren who, well, suck up — but somehow he manages to outrank and out-scoop them anyway. His street cred is through the roof, and his income triples every year. Can you say “gangsta”?
- Stunty (AKA “Mr. Dubl“) - After a stint at my fav organic firm, Todd had the stones to strike out as his own mang. He also runs a blog post series titled “Mr. Ploppy“. Was there ganja involved in that naming process? Nevermind. Gangsta.
- Shoe (AKA “Mr. Net Income“) - Check for $132994.97? Check. Hummer? Check. Gangsta? Check.
- Rand (AKA “Da Yellow Kickz“) - He writes a blog which presently has the most mindshare — bar none — in the organic circle. My only knock on Rand: he’s too nice. Gangsta? No check.
Yes, there are more SEO East-siders… but those are the real Dons. If you want to learn hardcore organic, they’re who you should be reading.
Peace and respect.
