No need to be a top 50 user, but something like top 5000 (i.e., several stories which made it to the homepage).
And get some friends through the system, too.
A story submitted from that account is going to have an exponentially higher chance to make the homepage than from a new, un-friended, untrusted, no-homepage-stories-yet account.
